Buy or lease a Mercedes: the question comes back with every new car, and the answer has shifted in recent years in France. Traditional loans are declining, LOA (lease with purchase option) and LLD (long-term lease) dominate, and manufacturer offers sometimes make leasing cheaper than paying cash.
This report compares the real budget of each option on the same model, the different financing channels and three driver profiles. The amounts quoted date from October 2026 and must be recalculated on a written quote before signing.
In short:
- The market has moved to leasing: in 2025, 92.2% of new-car financing granted by specialised lenders in France took the form of an LOA, against only 843 million euros of traditional loans in that segment (ASF).
- On a Mercedes A-Class A 180 at 39,750 euros kept 37 months and 45,000 kilometres, the estimated net cost ranges from 12,950 euros with the manufacturer LLD to 22,550 euros with a 60-month loan, a cash purchase coming to 17,750 euros after resale.
- Three channels finance a Mercedes: the manufacturer’s bank at the dealership, leasing platforms and high-street banks, with very different payments, services and end-of-contract handling.
- High-mileage drivers and those who keep their car beyond 6 years should buy, urban drivers who change every 3 years should lease.
Ownership or use: who carries which risk?
The real deciding factor is not the advertised monthly payment but how risks are split between the driver and the lender. Each option moves depreciation, mileage and condition to one side of the contract or the other.
| Risk | Cash purchase | Car loan | LOA | LLD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loss of value | Driver | Driver | Lender, unless the option is exercised | Lender |
| High mileage | No penalty | No penalty | Billed above the allowance | Billed above the allowance |
| Condition on return | Not applicable | Not applicable | Inspection if returned | Systematic inspection |
| Cash committed | Full price | Deposit, often 10% | Optional larger first payment | Often no deposit |
| Final ownership | Immediate | Immediate | Possible, at the set price | Never |
An LOA sits in the middle. The buy-back price, known as the residual value, is fixed on signing: if the car’s market value exceeds that price at the end of the contract, the driver should buy it, otherwise the car goes back.
The total budget of an A-Class by option
To compare like with like, the calculation uses the Mercedes A-Class A 180 Edition 140, listed at 39,750 euros, over the term of the LLD offer published by Mercedes-Benz France in October 2026: 37 months for 45,000 kilometres.
| A-Class A 180, 37 months, 45,000 km | Cash | 60-month loan (6% APR) | 37-month LOA | 37-month LLD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paid upfront | €39,750 | €3,975 | €3,975 | €0 |
| Monthly payment | €0 | €692 | €420 | €350 |
| Total paid in 37 months | €39,750 | €29,579 | €19,515 | €12,950 |
| Estimated net cost | €17,750 | €22,550 | €19,515 (if returned) | €12,950 |
The calculation assumes a resale value of 55% of list price after 37 months, an LOA purchase option at the same level and a 6% APR for the loan, close to the average 5-year car loan rate seen in 2026. Servicing, insurance and any return charges are not included.
The ranking often surprises: the manufacturer LLD beats paying cash. The 350-euro payment is based on a discounted price, and the manufacturer then resells the car on the used market, which funds part of the discount.
The loan comes last, as it combines depreciation and interest. Over 60 months, interest reaches 5,745 euros, nearly 4,800 euros of which is paid before the end of the third year.
Exercising an LOA option also changes the maths. Adding deposit, payments and buy-back, the A-Class then costs 41,375 euros, 1,625 euros more than the cash price, in exchange for three years of preserved cash.
Who finances: the manufacturer’s bank, a leasing platform or a high-street bank?
Choosing an option also means choosing who to deal with. The three channels do not finance the same cars on the same terms.
| Channel | Options | Vehicles | Strength | Watch point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approved dealer (manufacturer’s bank) | LOA, LLD, loan | New and certified used | Discounted offers, trade-in and workshop on site | Offers limited in time and stock |
| Leasing platform | LOA, LLD | Mostly recent used | Low payments thanks to absorbed depreciation | Workshop and trade-in not always included |
| High-street bank | Loan | Any vehicle | Immediate ownership, no mileage cap | Higher rate than subsidised offers |
The manufacturer’s bank, at the dealership
At an approved dealer, financing goes through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. It offers a standard LOA, from 13 to 72 months, and an LOA Facility, from 13 to 49 months, whose larger final instalment lowers the monthly payments.

In the Paris region, several dealer groups arrange these contracts, among them Como, which runs 13 Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the region, BYmyCAR, present at more than 100 sites in France and Europe, and Groupe MET. Trade-in terms and stock depth vary from group to group and are worth comparing on written quotes. For an electric model, the test drive often comes before this choice: our guide to a new electric Mercedes CLA test drive lists the options around Paris.
Leasing platforms
Online platforms mostly finance recent used Mercedes cars. Their pitch rests on depreciation: a 2- or 3-year-old car has already lost a large share of its value, which lowers the payment. The warranty attached to these cars varies by seller, a point covered in our comparison of channels for a used Mercedes with a warranty. One of them advertises, for example, a used A-Class from 247 euros a month on a 48-month LOA with a 10% deposit.
This type of financing is growing fast. According to the ASF, LOA accounted for 47.7% of used-car financing in France in 2025, up from 38% a year earlier.
Bank loans
A traditional loan remains the only option with no mileage cap and no return inspection. It suits drivers who want a Mercedes in their own name from delivery and plan to keep it for a long time.
Three costed use cases
A Paris-region employee driving 12,000 kilometres a year
Commuting, a few weekends away and a new car every three years: this profile matches the conditions of manufacturer LLD offers exactly. On an A-Class, 37 payments of 350 euros cover the period, with no resale to organise.
A sales rep covering 35,000 kilometres a year
At that pace, a lease allowance pushes the payment up sharply, and excess mileage is expensive on return. Buying, in cash or on credit, becomes the most predictable option again, ideally with a diesel engine such as the A 180 d, better suited to long motorway journeys.
A business owner financing the car through a company
For a company, lease payments and depreciation are deductible within caps set by article 39-4 of the French tax code: 30,000 euros for an electric car below 20 g of CO2 per kilometre, 20,300 euros between 20 and 49 g, 18,300 euros between 50 and 160 g and 9,900 euros above, according to the BOFiP. A petrol or diesel A-Class falls under the 18,300-euro cap, while a Mercedes CLA electric bought in France benefits from the highest cap.
Contract clauses that push the bill up
- The mileage allowance: any excess is billed on return. At 0.10 euro per kilometre, 10,000 extra kilometres add 1,000 euros.
- The return inspection: a scuffed wheel or a deep scratch is billed at dealer rates. A repair at an independent body shop before the appointment often costs less.
- The deposit: in an LOA, it takes the form of a larger first payment, collected by the lender and never refunded, even if the car is stolen early in the contract.
- Gap insurance: it covers the difference between the assessed value paid by the insurer and the balance still owed, a gap that quickly reaches several thousand euros on a 40,000-euro car.
- Early purchase: for consumer LOA contracts signed from 20 November 2026, the French ordinance of 3 September 2025 on consumer credit regulates early exercise of the option and the fees that may come with it.
Electric: leasing reduces resale uncertainty
The used value of an electric car depends on battery health and on the pace of technical progress, two factors that are hard to anticipate over five years. Leasing shifts that risk to the lender.
Manufacturer offers reflect this. In October 2026, Mercedes-Benz France lists the electric CLA Progressive Line on LLD at 545 euros a month over 37 months, after the 3,590-euro Coup de pouce bonus. Purchase prices are detailed in our report on the Mercedes CLA electric price.
For comparison with another offer, the review of Geely car prices shows purchase prices from 20,990 to 37,990 euros, for varied budgets.
